'Saint of Death' gathers followers in Mexican town

Lined up inside a dark-black painted building in Ciudad?Ju?rez, Mexico, worshippers of La Santa Muerte wait their turn to place their rolled-up paper prayers at the feet of a 5-foot tall statue of an idolized female skeletal figure. She is draped in a white, laced cloak and holds a small globe in one hand, and a tall wooden scythe in the other.

Many of the Santa Muerte statues started popping up in this city around 2009, when drug-related violence began to ravage this border town. More than 10,000 people have been killed in Ciudad?Ju?rez?alone since 2007, when Mexico?s outgoing President Felipe Calder?n?first declared war on the country?s drug cartels. The murder rate earned Ciudad?Ju?rez?the title of murder capital of the world for a while.

Followers recognize La Santa Muerte as an iconic figure of prayer for those looking for protection. The Catholic Church in Mexico denounces the worship as a cult.

The origins of Santa Muerte worship is debated, but many believe it came from the ancient Aztecs and their worship of death. The modern image of Santa Muerte is believed to have surfaced in the mid-20th?century in poor areas of Central Mexico. Now, Santa Muerte can be found throughout all of Mexico, the border, and even some parts of the United States.

?You can ask the Santa Muerte for many things,? said Yolanda Salazar, self-proclaimed priestess of the Santa Muerte cult in Ciudad Juarez.

?Here in?Ju?rez, people pray for protection, but also health, and for love. What?s important is it comes from the heart. If your intentions are true, it will help you,? she said.

Salazar lives in and runs this particular sanctuary, which is located in the heart of the city, just a drive of a few minutes from the border with the United States. It?s believed there are many makeshift sanctuaries and Santa Muerte altars in?Ju?rez, but Salazar?s is public, and the most popular.

She said she had just a handful of followers in 2010, when she first opened her Santa Muerte sanctuary, which consists of perhaps 100 or more small and large statues of Santa Muerte. This year, her weekly prayer vigils to the Santa Muerte draw in a crowd similar to the size of a Catholic Mass.

On this particular night, her vigil resembled more of a Mexican fiesta than an underground worship of death. Mariachi music flooded out into the street, and the 25 or more worshipers ate and danced while the others went inside to make their offerings.

?This has always existed here, but people were timid about professing their belief. They were afraid to be judged by society,? Salazar said. ?But now, a lot of us don?t really care what society thinks.?

According to Salazar, the violence in the city has drawn many followers to her sanctuary, searching for protection that neither the church nor their government can give them.

?Now that it?s come to light, I would say that 40 percent of the people in Juarez believe in Santa Muerte,? she said. ?Still, not all are professing it.?

In Mexico, a traditionally Catholic society, the worship of a deity that isn?t recognized by the Catholic Church usually?means?an association to criminal organizations. Members of drug cartels, commonly referred to as narcos, have long been followers of the Santa Muerte.

Narcos make offerings to the icon in return for protection in their illicit activities. In some rare and very brutal cases, the offerings have consisted of human body parts.

Eight people were arrested in northern Sonora state in March of this year after they were accused of killing two ten-year-old boys and a woman in ritual Santa Muerte sacrifices.

Salazar said that this type of worship is not the ?true cult? of La Santa Muerte.

?This is not exclusively for the narcos,? she said. ?Even police go to her for protection. Even they realize how powerful she is.?

The Catholic Church in Mexico has consistently denounced the worship of such a deity, but it cannot deny the rise in adoration for such figures in Mexico?s violent border towns.

Rev. Felipe de Jes?s Ju?rez,?head priest at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in CD.?Ju?rez, says the belief of Santa Muerte arrived in Ciudad?Ju?rez?around 2009 and 2010, at the height of the violence. Though the murder rate has dropped dramatically, the culture of death has not.

?We are all exposed to this new cultural situation. Here in the border we see a lot of different types of beliefs,??Ju?rez?said. ?This started with people who don?t have a good moral base. They are grabbing death, putting a cloak on it, and making it a saint. But it?s not a saint; it?s death.?

In the case of Santa Muerte, once followers pray to her, they believe she will grant them favors, but they must repay her.

?If they don?t, they believe they will be punished,??Ju?rez?said. ?So many live in fear.?

He said he opposes such a practice because he believes the grace of God is free.

Nonetheless,?Ju?rez?recognizes the power of Yolanda Salazar and her followers of this growing cult in his city.

?This woman, a self-proclaimed high priest who started out of her house, now has a full building with a sanctuary,? he said. ??The devotion in Mexico is very strong.?

And nowhere is the diversity of Santa Muerte worship more prevalent than inside the gates of a Salazar prayer vigil. Little boys and girls hold flowers and candles as offerings; their parents write the prayers on small sheets of paper.

All while a group of teenagers stand and chat near the door, waiting their turn to enter and place their own prayers.

?I feel a lot of security,? said Alexia Varaza, 20, a follower of Santa Muerte. ?I?ve had a lot of luck with La Santa Muerte. She gives me strength.?

Varaza?s mother and father are believers in the cult, but the rest of her family is skeptical.

?That stuff?s for sicarios ? for killers!? said Varaza,?explaining what her family thinks of the cult vigils she attends every weekend.

?That?s not what it is for me. I just tell them I?m a student, and I need the good luck!?

Whether for sicarios or students, Salazar?s doors are open 24/7 to people searching for protection in a city saturated with violence.

?The real cult, our cult, is to go out and profess the goodness of La Santa Muerte,? Salazar said. ?That?s why I opened the sanctuary.?

Salazar has plans to open another Santa Muerte sanctuary next year, with the expectation that her following will continue to grow as massively as during the past year. ?She certainly will be praying to her beloved Santa Muerte for that to happen.

UConn Clamps Down On Washington For 61-53 Win

HARTFORD ? ?

With all its problems rebounding, the UConn men's basketball team has had to find numerous ways to win this season.

The Huskies have won on occasion with great perimeter shooting. They've won by forcing turnovers, and limiting their own. They've won with solid defense.

On Saturday, they found another way to win ? yes, with rebounding.

"Our big men did a terrific job," coach Kevin Ollie said after UConn's 61-53 win over Washington at the XL Center on Saturday night. "A terrific job. Phil Nolan came in and he contributed, Tyler Olander contributed, Enosch Wolf contributed, and that's what we're going to need from them. We did it by committee. Enosch [hit] the floor five or six times, I counted."

Just hours after UConn's players learned that Ollie's "audition" as their head coach was over ? he had signed a five-year, $7 million contract to run through the 2017-18 season ? they turned in an emotional, inspired effort. Omar Calhoun scored 14 points, Shabazz Napier 13 points with eight rebounds, and Ryan Boatright 12 points as UConn's guards again carried the offense. But they outrebounded Washington 40 to 36, with Wolf getting nine off the bench ? only the second time this season they have done that.

"You could say UConn did a great job," Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said, "or you could say, 'They weren't any good, what in the world was wrong with your team?' I'm the coach of the Washington Huskies, so I am going to say, give UConn credit. There were a lot of defensive rebounds to be had, and they did a great job of going and getting them."

It also helped that Washington's big men, Aziz N'Diaye and Shawn Kemp Jr., got into foul trouble. N'Diaye, 7-foot, played only 14 minutes.

UConn (10-2) had more turnovers (17) than assists (13) in this game, so it was really the reverse of what had been happening.

"Hopefully at Marquette [on Tuesday], I can put those two together," Ollie joked, "and have rebounding and low turnovers."

The other key to this game was UConn's defensive effort, especially on C.J. Wilcox, Washington's leading scorer. Wilcox was averaging 19.6 points a game, and had scored 20 in seven of the past eight games, but he hit only 2 of 12 shots for five points in 35 minutes.

"Shabazz did a remarkable job on him," Ollie said, "taking him out of his comfort zone, getting in his space. It wasn't only Shabazz. It's Enosch moving over, being in the low position. We did it collectively. But it started with 'Bazz's ball pressure, so everything Wilcox did was tough for him."

With Wilcox taken off his game, and Boatright containing Andul Gaddy, held to eight points and also in foul trouble, Washington had to go to Scott Suggs, who led them with 15 points, hitting 5 of 15 from the floor. That was the way, apparently, that UConn wanted it to go.

"We tried many strategies to get him off his rhythm," Napier said of Wilcox, "whether it was denying him the ball, whether it was hitting him with some screens, getting him tired."

N'Diaye picked up two fouls, one a technical, early in the game, but Calhoun and Napier missed all four free throws, as UConn got off a bit sluggishly. Washington led 16-10 after a Suggs field goal.

Then UConn, sparked in part by an R.J. Evans appearance off the bench, ran off 11 points in a row to take a 21-16 lead. The lead changed eight times in the first half, but UConn led 31-26 at the break, despite missing all seven of its three-point attempts.

UConn began the second half with a 7-0 run, going on the break, once ignited by an Olander block, to open up a 12-point lead. Calhoun found Napier open in transition for a three-pointer to cap that run. Calhoun's layup, off a pass from Napier, extended the UConn lead to 44-30 with 14:46 to go.

Washington (8-5) surged back, getting within four on occasion, but UConn was hitting the floor for loose balls, and fighting for key rebounds, playing with the toughness that Ollie was demanding, and held on to its lead.

Boatright hit a fall-away jumper to make it 52-45 with 4:03 left, and after Wolf ripped away a rebound, Calhoun hit a jumper at the other end. Next time down the floor, Calhoun laid up an "alley-oop" pass and Wolf, 7-1, got up to get it, and dunked it. They were Wolf's only points, but they were the most memorable of the night and gave UConn an 11-point lead with 2:39 left.

"I was just trying to get every loose ball I could," Wolf said. "I know I wasn't going to score a lot today, get to every possible ball. I needed a physical game like this ? I took it personal and wanted to show I could respond."

With a split of its four games against high majors, wins over Michigan State and Washington, close losses to New Mexico and North Carolina State, UConn could find itself back in the rankings on Monday, with Big East play starting New Year's Day against Marquette in Milwaukee.

"I'm happy being 10-2, but I'm not satisfied," Ollie said. "Those are two different words. I think we can give a lot more."

Argentina asks NY appeals court to block payouts for debt holdouts

Saturday, December 29, 2012

Argentina is urging a US appeals court to reverse an order requiring the country to pay $1.33 billion to creditors who did not participate in its two debt restructurings, a legal case that could have huge ramifications for global debt markets.

Lawyers for Argentina's government said in court papers filed late on Friday that a trial judge was "wrong to ignore the chorus of voices" who opposed his November order on payments to so-called "holdout" creditors.

Those payments, to a court-controlled escrow account, would threaten the service of $24 billion in restructured debt, Argentina's lawyers wrote in papers filed in the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York.

"There is no authority permitting a US court to order a sovereign to bring its immune assets into the United States in order to 'turn over' or distribute them to its creditors," lawyers for the Argentine government said in the 69-page filing.

Lawyers representing Argentina confirmed that President Cristina Fern?ndez de Kirchner plans to send a bill to congress to allow a new debt swap under the same conditions it was done in 2010.

On Friday night, the US Government backed Argentina?s stance filed on the New York Court of appeals. ?By restricting the immunity that the properties of a foreign state possess excessively, the decision not only contradicts previous rulings by this court, but could could affect US foreign relations and jeopardize goods of the US Government,? the office of the US Attorney General

Eric Chua : Life, Business and Real Estate in Singapore ? Learn ...

There are many real estate experts, but they aren?t necessarily geniuses. Consider that many of these same people were present during the big real estate market crash. If you are planning on buying real estate, be sure to read this advice.

If you are buying a foreclosed home, you should assume that it will need repairs. If you decide to buy one of these bargains, be sure to get a thorough inspection done before purchasing it. If you are buying a foreclosed home, it will probably need new heating and air conditioning systems, as well as pest control services.

After selecting the property that you want to buy, you next need to employ the services of a professional real estate agent. The real estate agent you select also needs to be trustworthy. An experienced real estate agent who has a proven reputation will normally be a good choice. Meet with different agents until you find one that you know will act as your advocate.

TIP! If you can afford it, try to avoid buying a home that faces or backs a busy road. These houses can appear to be attractive due to the fact that they cost less than houses that are further away from busy roads; however, there is a good reason why they cost less.

If you want to buy a spot for a business, ensure that it is located in a good area with reasonable stability and opportunities for growth. If you choose to open your business in a crime-ridden or downtrodden part of town, you are not likely to secure an affluent customer base. Talk to real estate agents and find out what prime business locations are available.

Do not pay high premiums for your view lot. While a view might be important to you, if you ever want to resell, other buyers may not be willing to pay for it. As you can see, paying for a view is not wise if you end up paying too much.

Sellers will be more interested if you have an approval letter. The process of buying can be lengthened if you need to wait for approval, and this may wind up costing you extra.

TIP! If you are going to rent property, ensure that you know who is responsible for taking care of the yard before signing anything. There may be stipulations in the lease that require you to hire a professional to tend to the gardens, or you may be required to do it yourself.

Be pre-qualified for a mortgage loans before looking at houses. A giant reason is because you need to know if you will get the financing before you get your hopes up. Additionally, securing a mortgage is a lengthy process that can extend the home buying process.

Take time to consider a number of important things before coming up with an offering price for a new home. Taking into account information on the house?s condition, you can arrive at a final amount that seems fair to both you and the seller.

You should buy insurance before you start moving in everything and transforming your house into your new home. Without homeowner?s insurance, your home is not protected in the event of a fire, theft, or natural disaster.

TIP! When looking to purchase a new home, it is very important to avoid the trap of judging a house based on its decor. Smart sellers hide their house?s flaws with decorative items, so you need to learn how to look past the decor and analyze a home based on its architecture and structural condition.

Never buy real estate without getting the property inspected first. A home inspector will look over every part of the property to ensure that you are not buying a house with serious issues that are unseen. In addition to the expense of making renovations, you might be forced to vacate your home during the construction period.

Before buying a home, it is important for you to research the neighborhood thoroughly. This is a long-term investment, so make sure that you feel comfortable with the area. By being aware of the neighborhood, you will be know in advance exactly what you?re getting into.

If the home you are purchasing is just for yourself, it is wise to take along someone who has home buying experience. This person can be of valuable assistance simply because they may be able to point out flaws in the house that would otherwise have gone unnoticed. Tell them they should ask questions to the realtor.

TIP! Figure out the amount of money you can spend on a house by utilizing an online calculator. They will ask for information related to your income and expenses.

You should invest in a property right now. Property values are currently at an all time low because of the housing market crash. This is now a good time to get out of your apartment and into a house. In time, the market will increase again. This means you will have made a great investment purchase if you bought when prices were low.

Take your time to carefully measure a home you are highly interested in buying. You need to make sure public records for square footage match the listing. A number is considered valid if the difference is not more then about a hundred square feet. If it is more than this, then you might want to consider another property or do some research to figure out why the number as off.

Real Estate

TIP! Hire your own people to provide support services when you decide to purchase a residence. It could be very enticing to use the seller?s appraisers and inspectors, but choose not to do so.

Real estate agents would do well to reach out to former clients during the holiday season or the anniversary of a purchase date. This will remind people of how helpful you have been to them during their real estate experience. When you are concluding your greeting, remind them you would love to be referred to friends or family, because referrals are how you earn your living.

It is important to remain patient and be realistic when seeking a property to purchase. It can take some time to find the perfect property that will help you meet your goals and work with your business strategy.

It is of utmost importance to have a good understanding of mortgage loan terms when buying a home. Knowing how your monthly mortgage payment is impacted by the length of your mortgage, and the effect on total cost over the entire loan period, will help clear up any confusion later on.

TIP! When you buy a home, think about what your life will be like in five or ten years. For instance, ask yourself if you want to have children.

Real Estate

It is wise to do your homework in the real estate market, rather than listening to self-proclaimed experts. After all, how smart could they be if the market collapsed? Stay away from people who ?know everything? Instead, read over the advice in this article on purchasing real estate.

Relationship Help ? Commitment, Sharing and Responsibility ...

December 28, 2012

All too often we see young couples getting into relationships without really getting to know each other and see the good and the bad in their mate. They fall in love and feel they need to marry. However, in a large number of cases, these people are realizing marriage is more than playing house.

The problems resulting by not learning to share responsibilities, giving necessary support, equality when making decisions and giving a sincere commitment toward one another and to the children, if any, are astronomical. Nevertheless, in these modern times, the thought-to-be simplest solution is, at times, the most dreaded as well as the most sought after.

Needless to say, divorce is an ugly situation. Statistically speaking, more children are forced to deal with the negative process and results of divorce than adults. This is one of many reasons why many children are raised in a single parent household.

Marriage is supposed to be the unifying of two loving adults accomplishing commitment in its most pure form. In these times, though, this is furthest from the truth. This is one of many reasons why children are caught up in such turbulence, although, many do evolve with the situation to become prominent, successful members of society.

Like all things, prevention is the key rather than allowing negative matters to grow and become worse. Simple, present discussions can easily diffuse major, future problems. Many times, couples try to decide on a 50-50% exchange and never realize that 100-100% is the best path to travel. Most learn, after divorcing, that this is the path they?re forced to accept anyway. This decision, if made while courting, will benefit the couple as well as children, if children are involved as well. There always exists a level ground to meet on. Once met, give 100% toward fulfilling what?s expected. With, and like prevention, understanding is also the key!

In most cases, couples decide to divorce when agreements can?t be met within their shared lives. It?s only a matter of time where disagreements can cause a couple to become bitter toward one another. This, of course, entails altercation. To say the least, this can all be evaded by utilizing the simple art of conversation and cooperation.

For the most part, a relationship is called just that because it involves the union of two or more people that is quite significant than associates. Spousal relationships, though, stand high above the rest. Marriage is a union without boundaries, without selfishness, without dislike. Marriage is sharing. Understanding. Sacrifice. Marriage is the ultimate union between two people that is shared like no other union, so we, as civilized people, should treat it as such.

(AP) ? Powered by football and "The Voice," NBC took the lead in the ratings last week.

But even football couldn't tackle CBS' indomitable "NCIS," which edged out the Seahawks-49ers clash to become the week's most-watched show. It drew 19.6 million viewers, the Nielsen Co. said Thursday.

In third place was "NCIS: Los Angeles," followed by the season finale of "The Voice." The season finale of Fox's singing competition "The X Factor" ranked 14th.

Among several Christmas specials, "A White House Christmas: First Families Remember" was the most-watched, ranking 20th place.

A preview airing of a new NBC sitcom, "1600 Penn," ranked 23rd with 6.9 viewers. It premieres next month.

Overall for the week, NBC averaged 8.12 million viewers in prime time (4.9 rating, 8 share). CBS ranked second with 7.50 million viewers (4.9 rating, 8 share), while Fox had 5.64 million (3.3 rating, 6 share), ABC had 4.78 million (3.0 rating, 5 share), the CW had 1.43 million (.9 rating, 1 share) and Ion had 1.12 million (.8 rating, 1 share).

Among the Spanish-language networks, Univision led with an average of 3.21 million viewers (1.7 rating, 3 share). Telemundo had 1.24 million (0.6 rating, 1 share), TeleFutura had 740,000 (0.4 rating, 1 share), Estrella had 270,000 (0.1 rating, 0 share) and Azteca had 140,000 (0.1 rating, 0 share).

NBC's "Nightly News" topped the evening newscasts with an average of 9.1 million viewers (6.1 household rating, 11 share). ABC's "World News" was second with 7.9 million (5.3 rating, 10 share) and the "CBS Evening News" had 7.0 million viewers (4.6 rating, 9 share).

A ratings point represents 1,147,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 114.7 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of Dec. 17-23, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: "NCIS," CBS, 19.59 million; NFL Football: San Francisco at Seattle, NBC, 19.50 million; "NCIS: Los Angeles," CBS, 15.48 million; "The Voice" (Tuesday), NBC, 14.13 million; "Sunday Night NFL Pre-Kick," NBC, 13.67 million; "The Voice" (Monday), NBC, 13.37 million; "The Big Bang Theory," CBS, 10.95 million; "The OT," Fox, 10.94 million; "Mike & Molly," CBS, 10.79 million; "Hawaii Five-0," CBS, 10.54 million.

Social Media Marketing: Best Twitter Apps

rhokberlin (flickr)

The mistakes that most rental professionals can make with their Twitter account usually stem from the fact that they don?t understand the service. Specifically, they don?t realize how geared Twitter is toward mobile use. Twitter was invented for people to essentially publish their thoughts on-the-go, in real time, and it?s no coincidence that the text limit of a tweet is 140 characters, or the approximate character limit of a standard text message. The idea is that you will share your thoughts and opinions as they happen when you?re out and about. Your prospective leads are using Twitter this way, so you should as well.

For this reason, we suggest to you that to be use the service, you download some sort of app to your smartphone to employ Twitter to get your thoughts out.?As a rental professional, you?re mostly out and about anyway.

Tweetdeck

This is the most popular of all Twitter mobile apps ? so popular that Twitter had to own it themselves, buying it up in 2011. You can?t send your tweets out to other networks with this one for that reason (no more Foursquare or LinkedIn) except for Facebook. You can digest rental real estate news easily with Tweetdeck.

HootSuite

This app is ideal if you have multiple Twitter accounts, perhaps a professional one and a personal one, and also other social networks. ?They have apps for iPhone and Android both, as well as for Blackberry. They have a lot of bells and whistles for real Twitter fanatics such as click-through reports and message translation features, but for you as a rental professional, the most key aspect of this app is that you can send out your tweets on your business account separately from your personal account easily on this interface.

Echofon

The main selling point of this iPhone app is how clean it is. If you find the whole Twitter thing overwhelming sometimes, the less cluttered interface might be just the ticket to get you marketing your rentals and services on Twitter.

These are just some suggestions, and others you may choose to look into include TweetCaster and Plume for Android, and TweetBot and Twitterrific for iPhone. Ultimately, whichever program you feel most comfortable with is the right choice. The most important takeaway is to get your rental business on Twitter, especially on the go.

Autopsy-based study examines prevalence of atherosclerosis among U.S. service members

Dec. 25, 2012 ? Among deployed U.S. service members who died of combat or unintentional injuries between 2001-2011 and underwent autopsies, the prevalence of coronary atherosclerosis was 8.5 percent, with factors associated with a higher prevalence of the disease including older age, lower educational level and prior diagnoses of dyslipidemia, hypertension, and obesity, according to a study in the December 26 issue of JAMA.

"An early breakthrough in the understanding of the natural history of atherosclerotic heart disease was achieved in 1953, when Enos and colleagues at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology reported a 77 percent prevalence of coronary atherosclerosis among U.S. soldiers killed in the Korean War. By demonstrating anatomically that atherosclerosis affected a large proportion of young individuals without clinical evidence of heart disease, their study revolutionized the understanding of the onset and progression of cardiovascular disease. A follow-up report in the Vietnam War era, along with a number of autopsy studies in the civilian population provided additional evidence that the onset of atherosclerosis may occur at an early age," according to background information in the article. Since the publication of these studies, health policies have been implemented to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease associated with risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol, and smoking.

Bryant J. Webber, M.D., of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, Md., and colleagues conducted a study to assess the prevalence of atherosclerosis in the U.S. armed forces. The study included all U.S. service members who died of combat or unintentional injuries in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom/New Dawn between October 2001 and August 2011 and whose cardiovascular autopsy reports were available at the time of data collection in January 2012. Prevalence of atherosclerosis was analyzed by various demographic characteristics and medical history. Classifications of coronary atherosclerosis severity were determined prior to data analysis and designed to provide consistency with previous military studies: minimal (fatty streaking only), moderate (10 percent -- 49 percent luminal [interior of the vessel] narrowing of one or more vessels), and severe (50 percent or more narrowing of one or more vessels). Of the 3,832 service members included in the analysis, the average age was 26 years.

The overall prevalence of coronary or aortic atherosclerosis was 12.1 percent. The prevalence of any coronary atherosclerosis was 8.5 percent; severe coronary atherosclerosis was present in 2.3 percent, moderate in 4.7 percent, and minimal in 1.5 percent. The researchers found that age consistently produced the strongest association with prevalent atherosclerosis. Service members with atherosclerosis (average age, 30.5) were approximately 5 years older than those without; those 40 years of age and older had about 7 times the prevalence of disease as compared with those 24 years of age and younger (45.9 percent vs. 6.6 percent)

Lower education level and higher military entrance body mass index (BMI) were significantly associated with prevalent atherosclerosis, after adjusting for age. As compared with those who completed high school or less, those who completed at least some college had lower prevalence of disease. As compared with those with a normal BMI on military entrance, those with a BMI in the overweight or obese range had a significantly higher prevalence of atherosclerosis

The authors also found that age-adjusted atherosclerosis prevalence was associated with several diagnoses. As compared with those with no major cardiovascular risk factor diagnoses, those with a diagnosis of dyslipidemia (50.0 percent vs. 11.1 percent), hypertension (43.6 percent vs. 11.1 percent), or obesity (22.3 percent vs. 11.1 percent) had a significantly higher prevalence of atherosclerosis.

The researchers note that the prevalence rates found in this study demonstrate a decline from the rates of 77 percent noted in the Korean War and 45 percent in the Vietnam War, but add that targets for further improvement remain.

"Military and civilian health care systems should continue to help patients reduce their cardiovascular risk factors, beginning in childhood and continuing throughout adult life. Despite remarkable progress in prevention and treatment, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States and other developed nations, and even small improvements in the prevalence of smoking and other risk factors may reduce death rates further and prolong healthy lives."

Editorial: Combating the Epidemic of Heart Disease

Daniel Levy, M.D., of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, Bethesda, Md., comments on the findings of this study in an accompanying editorial.

"Autopsy studies have demonstrated that coronary disease begins at a young age. Consequently, primary prevention campaigns to address obesity and related risks should begin in childhood. Declines in cardiovascular disease risk factors have almost certainly contributed to the observed reductions in prevalence of subclinical atherosclerosis, incidence of clinical atherosclerotic disease, and deaths from heart disease. Although age-adjusted heart disease death rates have declined by 72 percent since their peak during the Vietnam War years, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. The national battle against heart disease is not over; increasing rates of obesity and diabetes signal a need to engage earlier and with greater intensity in a campaign of pre-emption and prevention.

Social Media Report 2012: Top Trends SMBs ... - ReachLocal Blog

Last updated 6 hours 19 minutes ago

Nielsen?s State of the Media: The Social Media Report 2012 reflects on various social media trends of 2012, as well as the potential impact they will have on the coming year. There is no denying that social media is more popular than ever with consumers, and that having a social media presence is critical for SMBs? online marketing strategies in 2013.? Here are a few highlights from the report.

Mobile Usage Is Not Slowing Down

As you might have guessed, the amount of time consumers spent on PCs and Smartphones increased between July 2011 and July 2012.? Time spent on these devices grew by 21%, while time on apps rose 120% in that same period.? While PCs still remain our primary source of Internet access, the usage of mobile Web and apps are increasing at a significant rate. Small businesses can?t afford to ignore mobile any longer, and should invest in mobile-friendly advertising and sites to reach this growing audience.?

Time Spent on Social Networks Grew 37%.

From July 2011 to July 2012, the time consumers spent on social media sites grew from 88.4B minutes to a whopping 121.1B minutes. Nielsen attributes this substantial growth in part to the rise of mobile apps, which enable us to stay connected to our favorite sites while on the go. In fact, we spent seven times more minutes on apps than on the mobile Web. Time spent on these sites means social media access is not only on the rise, but also that we are more engaged when we do visit them. For small businesses, this means being active on social media is more important than ever in order to reach consumers spending a large portion of their time there.?

Consumers Value Social Customer Service

For more and more consumers, social care, also known as social customer service, is becoming an increasingly important, and valuable social media trend for SMBs to leverage. Nielsen reports that one in three social media users prefer social care to contacting a company by phone. That means that more consumers are using social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and the company blog to reach out to businesses and brands in the hope of resolving a customer service issue. SMBs are not immune to this trend, and many will see an influx of customer complaints through these channels, which can impact their online reputation. As a result, it?s vital for businesses to monitor their social media pages regularly and respond to customer questions, complaints, and more as soon as possible.?

As we?ve seen throughout the year, mobile and social media continue to top consumers? online behavior. And as 2012 winds down, it?s important for small businesses to think about whether they have successfully taken advantage of some of these social media trends, and how they can incorporate them in the future. You can read the entire Nielsen social media report here.?

How do mobile and social media fit into your online marketing strategy? Let us know in the comments!

'Tis The Season For Life Lessons

By Brett Spiegel for Everyday Health

We all move throughout the year consumed by our own stresses and responsibilities -- whether it's work, money, family obligations, or just general anxiety about the future. However, as the air starts to cool and the snow begins to fall, low and behold it's holiday time. Hearts lift, joy rises, and people treat each other with genuine kindness.

Or do they? The lessons of the season are prime for emotional investigation. But what exactly is it about this time of year that separates the saints from the Scrooges?

Can You Bounce Back From Life's Challenges?

Did Ebenezer Have It Right From the Get-Go?

Charitable giving is always a good idea, right? But maybe not your first idea, according to new research from the American Psychological Association (APA), which found that people are more likely to pay greed forward than generosity.

"The bulk of the scientific research on this concept has focused on good behavior, and we wondered what would happen when you looked at the entire gamut of human behaviors," said lead researcher Kurt Gray, PhD, assistant professor of social psychology at the University of North Carolina (UNC), Chapel Hill, in a press release.

The UNC researchers, with assistance from researchers at Harvard University, examined the behaviors of 100 recruits from a Cambridge, Mass., subway station after informing individuals that someone was splitting $6 with them. Participants were then given envelopes with variable amounts of money -- the full sum, half, or nothing at all -- and were then told to split an additional $6 with a future volunteer.

Those who had initially acquired the entire $6 paid forward only half of the extra money, while those who had gotten nothing were more inclined to share only a miniscule portion of the new $6, if anything at all.

"The idea of paying it forward is this cascade of goodwill will turn into a utopia, with everyone helping everyone," added Dr. Gray. "Unfortunately, greed or looking out for ourselves is more powerful than true acts of generosity."

The study authors concluded that acts of generosity failed to prompt exact or even similar reactions. Additionally, those victimized by greed perpetuated a pattern of future greed among others.

One possible reason: Negative stimuli held more weight with the test audience and thus acts of greed triumphed over acts of generosity. Gray said that this behavior may be rooted in a person's physiological instinct for survival. "If there is a tiger nearby, you really have to take notice or you'll get eaten," he said. "If there is a beautiful sunset or delicious food, it's not a life-or-death situation."

It's (Still) a Wonderful Life!

But don't fret; there's still hope. If George Bailey can alter his tune, so can others. According to a new study out of Brigham Young University (BYU) in Utah, there is truth behind the idea that holidays can change a person's heart, famously exemplified by Scrooge himself.

The researchers analyzed the experiences of 14 people who experienced deep, unexpected, or life-long change -- similar to the way in which the lonely and bitter Scrooge gained enlightenment from the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future.

"Like our participants, Scrooge was suffering. There was disintegration. There was a world that was ripe for change because of suffering going on," said Jeff Skalski, study co-author and former BYU grad student, in a press release. "Just by their presence, a trusted friend can open up possibilities and a sense of faith in what's possible that one can't see."

For the study, to be published in the January issue of The Humanistic Psychologist, Skalski recruited subjects through online posts in Illinois and Utah. Though an average of nine years had lapsed since their reported transformations, a majority of the participants could recall their moment-of-change like it was yesterday, a turning point from their overwhelming financial, academic, or relationship stress and woes.

One study subject, "Kevin," said about his transformation, "I say it's the best thing that could've happened, because my life is so much more rewarding than it once was. You can't put a price tag on certain?events that I maybe missed before -- certain events, and a marriage, and a family, birthdays, you know? Certain things that are just really fun to be a part of are more meaningful, and it is happiness -- the kind that lasts. I know these truths have been around forever. But for me they're new."

"We all know deep down inside that human beings can and do change in profound and significant ways," said Skalski.

But do you need to hit rock bottom like Scrooge to accept change and reevaluate what's important in your life? "That led me to think, well, is there a way that people can capitalize on these mechanisms of change and initiate them themselves instead of bottoming out," said study co-author and BYU psychology professor Sam Hardy, PhD, in the release. "Can you self-initiate this kind of change?" Well, perhaps that answer lies in future studies.
