Microscopy technique could help computer industry develop 3-D components

June 28, 2013 ? A technique developed several years ago at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for improving optical microscopes now has been applied to monitoring the next generation of computer chip circuit components, potentially providing the semiconductor industry with a crucial tool for improving chips for the next decade or more.

The technique, called Through-Focus Scanning Optical Microscopy (TSOM), has now been shown able to detect tiny differences in the three-dimensional shapes of circuit components, which until very recently have been essentially two-dimensional objects. TSOM is sensitive to features that are as small as 10 nanometers (nm) across, perhaps smaller -- addressing some important industry measurement challenges for the near future for manufacturing process control and helping maintain the viability of optical microscopy in electronics manufacturing.

For decades, computer chips have resembled city maps in which components are essentially flat. But as designers strive to pack more components onto chips, they have reached the same conclusion as city planners: The only direction left to build is upwards. New generations of chips feature 3-D structures that stack components atop one another, but ensuring these components are all made to the right shapes and sizes requires a whole new dimension -- literally -- of measurement capability.

"Previously, all we needed to do was show we could accurately measure the width of a line a certain number of nanometers across," explains NIST's Ravikiran Attota. "Now, we will need to measure all sides of a three-dimensional structure that has more nooks and crannies than many modern buildings. And the nature of light makes that difficult."

Part of the trouble is that components now are growing so small that a light beam can't quite get at them. Optical microscopes are normally limited to features larger than about half the wavelength of the light used -- about 250 nanometers for green light. So microscopists have worked around the issue by lining up a bunch of identical components at regular distances apart and observing how light scatters off the group and fitting the data with optical models to determine the dimensions. But these optical measurements, as currently used in manufacturing, have great difficulty measuring newer 3-D structures.

Other non-optical methods of imaging such as scanning probe microscopy are expensive and slow, so the NIST team decided to test the abilities of TSOM, a technique that Attota played a major role in developing. The method uses a conventional optical microscope, but rather than taking a single image, it collects 2-D images at different focal positions forming a 3-D data space. A computer then extracts brightness profiles from these multiple out-of-focus images and uses the differences between them to construct the TSOM image. The TSOM images it provides are somewhat abstract, but the differences between them are still clear enough to infer minute shape differences in the measured structures -- bypassing the use of optical models, which introduce complexities that industry must face.

"Our simulation studies show that TSOM might measure features as small as 10 nm or smaller, which would be enough for the semiconductor industry for another decade," Attota says. "And we can look at anything with TSOM, not just circuits. It could become useful to any field where 3-D shape analysis of tiny objects is needed."

    The DNA Data Deluge

Please... entire DNA genomes are tiny... on the order of 1Gb, with no compression. Taking into account the huge similarities to published genomes, we can compress that by at least 1000X. What they are talking about is the huge amount of data spit out by the sequencing machines in order to determine your genome. Once determined, it's tiny.

That said, what I need is raw machine data. I'm having to do my own little exome research project. My family has a very rare form of X-linked color blindness that is most likely caused by a single gene defect on our X chromosome. It's no big deal, but now I'm losing central vision, with symptoms most similar to late-onset Starardt's Disease. My UNC ophthalmologist beat the experts at John Hopkins and Jacksonville's hospital, and made the correct call, directly refuting the other doctor's diagnosis of Stargartd's. She though I had something else and that my DNA would prove it. She gave me the opportunity to have my exome sequenced, and she was right.

So, I've got something pretty horrible, and my ophthalmologist thinks it's most likely related to my unusual form of color blindness. My daughter carries this gene, as does my cousin and one of her sons. Gene research to the rescue?!? Unfortunately... no. There are simply too few people like us. So... being a slashdot sort of geek who refuses to give up, I'm running my own study. Actually, the UNC researchers wanted to work with me... all I'd have to do is bring my extended family from California to Chapel Hill a couple of times over a couple of years and have them see doctors at UNC. There's simply no way I could make that happen.

Innovative companies to the rescue... This morning, Axeq, a company headquartered in MD, received my families DNA for exome sequencing at their Korean lab. They ran an exome sequencing special in April: $600 per exome, with an order size minimum of six. They have been great to work with, and accepted my order for only four. Bioserve, also in MD, did the DNA extraction from whole blood, and they have been even more helpful. The blood extraction labs were also incredibly helpful, once we found the right places (very emphatically not Labcorp or Quest Diagnostics). The Stanford clinic lab manager was unbelievably helpful, and in LA, the lab director at the San Antonio Hospital Lab went way overboard, So far, I have to give Axeq and Bioserve five stars out of five, and the blood draw labs deserve a six.

Assuming I get what I'm expecting, I'll get a library of matched genes, and also all the raw machine output data, for four relatives. The output data is what I really need, since our particular mutation is not currently in the gene database. Once I get all the data, I'll need to do a bit of coding to see if I can identify the mutation. Unfortunately, there are several ways that this could be impossible. For example, "copy number variations", or CNVs, if they go on for over a few hundred base pairs, are unable to be detected with current technology. Ah... the life of a geek. This is yet another field I have to get familiar with...

CompuLab previews MintBox 2 four times the power, same Linux Mint flavor

Now that Linux Mint 15 is available, it's only fair that we get a new MintBox to match. The CompuLab and Linux Mint teams won't disappoint us on that front: they've just previewed the MintBox 2, a big upgrade to their open source mini PC. The new version drops AMD processors in favor of an Intel Core i5 that's reportedly four times faster than the AMD T56 in the MintBox Pro. The refresh also doubles the storage to 500GB while adding a second gigabit Ethernet jack for server duties. CompuLab and Linux Mint haven't said how soon they expect the MintBox 2 to ship, but they're expecting a $599 price at Amazon.

ITC judge rules against InterDigital in first round of 3G patent case

After two long years, the International Trade Commission has finally come to a decision in favor of Huawei, Nokia and ZTE in a 3G patent case brought by InterDigital in 2011. According to an ITC judge, the three phone manufacturers did not violate the seven InterDigital-owned patents that covers various WCDMA and CDMA2000 technologies used to make their devices. InterDigital even went so far as to request the ban of US sales of these devices pending a decision. The Pennsylvania-based company filed a similar complaint against LG, which chose a settlement instead of going through the courts. Still, this is just a preliminary ruling; the final decision of the case is expected in October.

Target cuts ties with Deen; drugmaker distances

NEW YORK (AP) ? Paula Deen's multimillion-dollar merchandise and media empire continues to unravel following revelations that she used racial slurs in the past.

Target Corp., Home Depot Inc. and diabetes drug maker Novo Nordisk on Thursday became the latest companies to distance themselves from the Southern celebrity chef.

Home Depot, which sold Paula Deen-branded cookware and kitchen products only online, said it pulled the merchandise off its website on Wednesday. And Target said that it will phase out its Paula Deen-branded cookware and other items in stores and on its website.

"Once the merchandise is sold out, we will not be replenishing inventory," said Molly Snyder, a Target spokeswoman.

Meanwhile, Novo Nordisk said it and Deen have "mutually agreed to suspend our patient education activities for now." Deen, who specializes in Southern comfort food, had been promoting the company's drug Victoza since last year when she announced she had Type 1 diabetes.

These are the latest blows dealt to Deen since comments she made in a court deposition became public. Last week, the Food Network said that it would not renew her contract. On Monday, pork producer Smithfield Foods dropped her as a spokeswoman. Then, on Wednesday, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's biggest retailer, said it too was cutting ties with Deen following a tearful "Today" show interview in which she said she's not a racist.

On the same day, Caesars Entertainment announced that Paula Deen's name is being stripped from four buffet restaurants owned by the company. Caesars said that its decision to rebrand its restaurants in Joliet, Ill.; Tunica, Miss.; Cherokee, N.C.; and Elizabeth, Ind., was a mutual one with Deen.

The stakes are high for Deen, who Forbes magazine ranked as the fourth highest-earning celebrity chef last year, bringing in $17 million. She's behind Gordon Ramsay, Rachel Ray and Wolfgang Puck, according to Forbes.

Deen's empire, which spans from TV shows to furniture and cookware, generates total annual revenue of nearly $100 million, estimates Burt Flickinger III, president of retail consultancy Strategic Resource Group.

But Flickinger says that the controversy has cost her as much as half of that business. He also estimates that she could lose up to 80 percent by next year as suppliers extricate themselves from their agreements.

"The accelerating domino effect is commercially disastrous for Paula Deen's empire," he said.

It's a dramatic fall from a woman who overcame her humble Southern roots and personal hardships to build a merchandising and media empire.

Deen, who grew up in Albany, Georgia, was grappling with a failed marriage, the death of her parents and a prolonged battle with agoraphobia when she started her home-based catering business called The Bag Lady in June 1989, according to her company website.

Then a mother of two teenage boys, Jamie and Bobby, and on the verge of homelessness, she used her last $200 to start the catering business. She describes the business as delivering "lunch-and-love-in-a-bag." Five years later, she opened her first restaurant called The Lady and Sons in Savannah, Georgia. Her first cookbook, "The Lady and Sons Savannah Country Cookbook," came out in 1998.

Soon after, she had her first TV appearance on QVC. But it was when "Paula's Home Cooking," began airing on the Food Network in 2002 that she started to hit stardom, according to her site. Deen now has two shows airing on the Food Network: In addition to "Paula's Home Cooking," there's "Paula's Best Dishes," which made its debut in 2008.

Deen's empire has continued to grow over the years as her brand has blossomed.

In addition to her The Lady and Sons restaurant, Deen owns with her brother, Bubba, a seafood restaurant in Savannah called Uncle Bubba's Oyster House. Deen is the author of 14 cookbooks that have sold more than 8 million copies and her bimonthly magazine "Cooking with Paula Deen" has a circulation of nearly 1 million, according to her website. And Deen's product lines span from a full line of cookware to assorted food items to furniture.

Not every company Deen does business with has severed ties with the celebrity chef. Among other stores that sell her products, Kohl's Corp. declined to comment, while Macy's Inc. and Sears Holdings Corp. said they're evaluating the situation. QVC, meanwhile, said it's reviewing its deal with Deen.

And book-buyers are so far standing by Deen. As of Thursday morning, "Paula Deen's New Testament: 250 Recipes, All Lightened Up," ranked No. 1 on Amazon.com. The book is scheduled for October. Another Deen book, "Paula Deen's Southern Cooking Bible," was at No. 13. Several other Deen books were out of stock.

Want to Bulk Up Fast? Try German Volume Training!

Have you ever thought about what to do to add muscle mass in a short time without the use of steroids or other drugs? If you haven?t found an answer yet, here it is: German Volume Training (GVT)!

From my own experience and the experiences of others it can be said that you can add up to 11 lbs (approx. 5 kg) during the first part of GVT which lasts 6 weeks. That?s really a lot, isn?t it?

There are several rumours about the origin of this method but in common it originates in Germany (which is the reason why it?s called German Volume Training).
The principle of GVT is to use an extensive volume (10 sets of 10 reps) with some basic exercises (4 exercises each session) in a 3-day split which works your muscles so hard that they are forced to grow rapidly to stand the load. If you search the internet for GVT you?ll find several different varieties. I?ll explain the one I used (which is inspired by the one recommended by the famous strength coach Charles Poliquin aka ?The Guru of GVT?).

    Here?s how it works:

    Guidelines:

In every session you perform 10 sets of 10 reps of two main exercises as supersets (meaning 1 set of exercise 2 is directly following 1 set of exercise 1 then 90 seconds rest) and then 3 supersets of 10-12 reps of two supplementary exercises (only rest 60 seconds between the supersets here).? If you don?t want to train with supersets, do the exercises alone; exercise 1 with 10 sets followed by exercise 2 with 10 sets (in that case rest time should be only 60 seconds between the sets). Use 60 percent of your 1 rep maximum load (the load you can lift only once) for the main exercises (which represents approximately the load you can lift 20 times to failure).

For the supplementary exercises use the load you can lift 12 times to failure. Don?t change the weight during a session, even if you think it?s too light during the first sets (what you probably will think when starting with the first sets of the main exercises) or too heavy (probably the case in the last sets of the main exercises). If you can?t manage the 10 rep target in the last sets that won?t be a problem (in fact it?s quiet normal in the beginning). Once you?re able to perform 10 sets of 10 reps increase the load by 4-5 percent and go on.?

Regarding the cadence: 4020 for example means that you lower the weight for 4 seconds and directly lift it for 2 seconds (no short rest at any position).
    The first 6 weeks

Day 1 ? Chest and Back:

Main exercise 1 ? (Decline) Dumbbell presses (or Bench Press); 10 sets of 10 reps; cadence 4020
Main exercise 2 ? Chin-Ups (or Lat Pulldowns if you can?t do chin-ups); 10 sets of 10 reps; cadence 4020 (Lat Pulldowns vice versa)
Supplementary exercise 1 ? (Incline) Dumbbell Flyes; 3 sets of 10-12 reps; cadence 3020
    Supplementary exercise 2 ? One-Arm Dumbbell Row; 3 sets of 10-12 reps; cadence 3020

    Day 2 ? Off

Day 3 ? Legs and Abs:
Main exercise 1 ? Barbell Squat; 10 sets of 10 reps; cadence 4020
Main exercise 2 ? Lying Leg Curls; 10 sets of 10 reps; cadence 4020
Supplementary exercise 1 ? Leg Raises (or Bent Leg Raises); 3 sets of 10-12 reps; cadence 2020
Supplementary exercise 2 ? (Seated) Calf Raise; 3 sets of 10-12 reps; cadence 2020

    Day 4 ? Off

Day 5 ? Arms and Shoulders:

Main exercise 1 ? Parallel Bar Dips; 10 sets of 10 reps; cadence 4020
Main exercise 2 ? Hammer Curls; 10 sets of 10 reps; cadence 4020
Supplementary exercise 1 ? Dumbbell Lying Rear Lateral Raise; 3 sets of 10-12 reps; cadence 2020
Supplementary exercise 2 ? Dumbbell Lateral Raises; 3 sets of 10-12 reps; cadence 2020

    Day 6 ? Off

    Day 7 ? Off

Use a stop watch to control rest times and use a training log to control improvements!

After 6 weeks you can either follow another workout routine or you can continue with GVT. I used to switch to another routine afterwards, but if you want to continue you can find a lot of possible workout designs in the internet.

Apple Health Info: Crazy Facts About The Fruit

Everyone's heard about an apple a day. As one of the most popular fruits in America, it's easy to get people eating these fiber-rich, crisp and juicy fruits. And that's a good thing for health: A diet rich in apples has been associated with a host of health benefits, including weight loss, improved lung function, lower risk of stroke, cancer and heart disease.

But just because the humble apple is ubiquitous doesn't mean it's without some mystery as well. Read on to learn more about the fruit you've been eating for, well, ever.

    Apple Allergies Are Pollen Allergies
When we think about food allergies, we're much more likely to picture peanuts, shellfish or even eggs. But mild apple allergies are not uncommon. Of note, experts believe that it's the birch pollen that's commonly found on the surface of a raw apple that causes a reaction, rather than a compound found inside the fruit.

Apples Are A True Diet Food
The high water and fiber content of apples mean that you'll feel full longer, despite few (about 95) calories in each one. But apples give you an extra, fat-blasting advantage: A compound in the peel called ursolic acid has been shown to help reduce brown fat in mice and, in a separate study, was found to increase calorie burn and reduce obesity risk in mice.

    Apples Are Diverse
The apple is the most diverse food plant in the world. According to food journalist and apple expert Rowan Jacobsen, there used to be 16,000 types of apples in the U.S. alone. A current review of USDA data puts the variety diversity at 2,450 types.

The Way We Eat Apples Wastes Almost A Third
As the video above demonstrates, eating an apple in a circular pattern around the core, wastes about 30 percent of the apple's flesh (or between 20 and 30 calories).

    2013-06-25-APPLESWATER_original.jpg
Apples Have A Lot Of Air
Unsubstantiated Internet rumor suggests that apples are 25 percent air, but the only study we could find put the figure at closer to 18 percent.

Video game tech used to steer cockroaches on autopilot

June 25, 2013 ? North Carolina State University researchers are using video game technology to remotely control cockroaches on autopilot, with a computer steering the cockroach through a controlled environment. The researchers are using the technology to track how roaches respond to the remote control, with the goal of developing ways that roaches on autopilot can be used to map dynamic environments -- such as collapsed buildings.

The researchers have incorporated Microsoft's motion-sensing Kinect system into an electronic interface developed at NC State that can remotely control cockroaches. The researchers plug in a digitally plotted path for the roach, and use Kinect to identify and track the insect's progress. The program then uses the Kinect tracking data to automatically steer the roach along the desired path.?

The program also uses Kinect to collect data on how the roaches respond to the electrical impulses from the remote-control interface. This data will help the researchers fine-tune the steering parameters needed to control the roaches more precisely.

"Our goal is to be able to guide these roaches as efficiently as possible, and our work with Kinect is helping us do that," says Dr. Alper Bozkurt, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at NC State and co-author of a paper on the work.

"We want to build on this program, incorporating mapping and radio frequency techniques that will allow us to use a small group of cockroaches to explore and map disaster sites," Bozkurt says. "The autopilot program would control the roaches, sending them on the most efficient routes to provide rescuers with a comprehensive view of the situation."

The roaches would also be equipped with sensors, such as microphones, to detect survivors in collapsed buildings or other disaster areas. "We may even be able to attach small speakers, which would allow rescuers to communicate with anyone who is trapped," Bozkurt says.

Bozkurt's team had previously developed the technology that would allow users to steer cockroaches remotely, but the use of Kinect to develop an autopilot program and track the precise response of roaches to electrical impulses is new.

The interface that controls the roach is wired to the roach's antennae and cerci. The cerci are sensory organs on the roach's abdomen, which are normally used to detect movement in the air that could indicate a predator is approaching -- causing the roach to scurry away. But the researchers use the wires attached to the cerci to spur the roach into motion. The wires attached to the antennae send small charges that trick the roach into thinking the antennae are in contact with a barrier and steering them in the opposite direction.

The paper, "Kinect-based System for Automated Control of Terrestrial Insect Biobots," will be presented at the Remote Controlled Insect Biobots Minisymposium at the 35th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society July 4 in Osaka, Japan. Lead author of the paper is NC State undergraduate Eric Whitmire. Co-authors are Bozkurt and NC State graduate student Tahmid Latif. The research was supported by the National Science Foundation.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama declared the debate over climate change and its causes obsolete Tuesday as he announced a wide-ranging plan to tackle pollution and prepare communities for global warming.

In a major speech at Georgetown University, Obama warned Americans of the deep and disastrous effects of climate change, urging them to take action before it's too late.

"As a president, as a father and as an American, I'm here to say we need to act," Obama said.

Obama announced he was directing his administration to launch the first-ever federal regulations on heat-trapping gases emitted by new and existing power plants ? "to put an end to the limitless dumping of carbon pollution."

Other aspects of the plan will boost renewable energy production on federal lands, increase efficiency standards and prepare communities to deal with higher temperatures.

Even before Obama unveiled his plan Tuesday, Republican critics in Congress were lambasting it as a job-killer that would threaten the economic recovery. Obama dismissed those critics, noting the same arguments have been used in the past when the U.S. has taken other steps to protect the environment.

"That's what they said every time," Obama said. "And every time, they've been wrong."

Obama also offered a rare insight into his administration's deliberations on Keystone XL, an oil pipeline whose potential approval has sparked an intense fight between environmental activists and energy producers.

The White House has insisted the State Department is making the decision independently, but Obama said Tuesday he's instructing the department to approve it only if the project won't increase overall, net emissions of greenhouse gases.

"Allowing the Keystone pipeline to be built requires a finding that doing so would be in our nation's interests," Obama said. "Our national interest would be served only if this project does not significantly exacerbate the problem of carbon pollution."

A top aide to House Speaker John Boehner said the remarks indicated that the pipeline should be approved.

"The standard the president set today should lead to speedy approval of the Keystone pipeline," Boehner spokesman Brendan Buck said.

Still, environmentalist took heart in Obama's remarks, noting it was the first time the administration had directly linked approval of the pipeline to its effect on pollution. The White House has previously resisted efforts by environmental groups to link the Keystone project to broader effort curb carbon pollution from power plants.

Obama touted America's strengths ? research, technology and innovation ? as factors that make the U.S. uniquely poised to take on the challenges of global warming. He mocked those who deny that humans are contributing to the warming of the planet, adding that he "doesn't have much patience" for anybody who refuses to acknowledge the problem.

"We don't have time for a meeting of the flat-earth society," Obama said.

Obama's far-reaching plan marks the president's most prominent effort yet to deliver on a major priority he laid out in his first presidential campaign and recommitted to at the start of his second term: to fight climate change in the U.S. and abroad and prepare American communities for its effects. Environmental activists have been irked that Obama's high-minded goals never materialized into a comprehensive plan.

By expanding permitting on public lands, Obama hopes to generate enough electricity from renewable energy projects such as wind and solar to power the equivalent of 6 million homes by 2020, effectively doubling the electric capacity federal lands now produce. He also set a goal to install 100 megawatts of energy-producing capacity at federal housing projects by the end of the decade.

Obama also announced $8 billion in federal loan guarantees to spur investment in technologies that can keep carbon dioxide produced by power plants from being released into the atmosphere.

But the linchpin of Obama's plan is the controls on new and existing power plants. Forty percent of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions, and one-third of greenhouse gases overall, come from electric power plants, according to the federal Energy Information Administration. The Obama administration already has proposed controls on new plants, but those controls have been delayed and not yet finalized.

Tuesday's announcement came just weeks after Obama's nominee to head the Environmental Protection Agency, Gina McCarthy, assured senators during her confirmation process that the EPA was "not currently" developing any regulations on existing sources of greenhouse gases. McCarthy said if EPA were to look at such regulations, it would allow states, the public and others to "offer meaningful input on potential approaches."

Republicans quickly dismissed Obama's plan, calling it a "war on coal" and a "war on jobs," reflecting the opposition to climate legislation on Capitol Hill that prompted a frustrated Obama to sidestep lawmakers and take action himself.

"It's tantamount to kicking the ladder out from beneath the feet of many Americans struggling in today's economy," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said on the floor of the Senate.

Environmental groups offered a mix of praise and wariness that Obama would follow through on the ambitious goals he laid out. Bill Snape of the Center for Biological Diversity described it as too little, too late.

"What he's proposing isn't big enough, doesn't move fast enough, to match the terrifying magnitude of the climate crisis," Snape said.

Others hailed the plan, galvanized by the fact that Obama was taking action on his own after Congress' reluctance to tackle the issue using legislation.

"The president nailed it: this can't wait," said Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council. "We will cut this carbon pollution today so our children don't inherit climate chaos tomorrow."
