I was working with someone the other day that has dropped 20lbs of fat and added 6lbs of muscle this year in his mid-forties. With someone new to exercising, or returning after a long (long) break this isn?t that awesome, but to someone who ate pretty well and trained consistently it was quite a feat. We went over food and training logs to find the major reasons and we found that by doing what is conventionally taught NOT TO DO was what often led to the greatest gains. Huh?!
1) Breakfast turned into Espresso and water with MCT oil. Creatine and 5g og Hydro Whey.
2) Snaking was virtually removed. Three meals a day provides enough.
3) Calories were cut pretty far down. Far below what a typical ?Paleo? called for but enough to spare muscle and actually add some.
A typical day looked like this:
After a few hours working, a good sized Lunch was 1st ??meal? (eggs and turkey sausage or burger patties with cheese and shrooms), a 2nd Lunch (Lunch 2.0) was 2nd meal and was somewhat lighter (salad and lean protein). If workout was conditioning only Leucine and Gatorade were taken during and dinner was eaten later and consisted of meat and vegetable and sometimes a Sweet Potato. If workout was conditioning and heavy weight training the post workout shake consisted of some whey, hydro whey and maltodextrin and dinner would contain some quinoa or rice along with protein and vegetables.
So where?s the ?thing?? There isn?t a name for this. It isn?t Plaeo, or Zone, or Zoneo or Primal or IF. It isn?t sexy and it isn?t cool, but for him it worked and continues to work. So what?s the take away? If you are not happy with, or getting results from, what you are doing start doing some research and trying what has worked for others and experiment on yourself.
Are we advocating fasting? Who cares! Try something and see the results but please check with a DR. you trust before.
