Egypt leader claims victory in captives' release

CAIRO (AP) ? The safe release Wednesday of seven conscripts kidnapped by suspected militants in Sinai brought a victory for Egypt's Islamist president after months of criticism that his government is mismanaging the country.

Seated with top military brass and senior officials, an animated Mohammed Morsi lauded the release as a show of how unified and strong his leadership is and urged his opponents to work with his government in dealing with Egypt's multiple crises.

Despite the end of the nearly weeklong kidnapping drama, however, Morsi's government has left unresolved the issue of widespread lawlessness and growing power of Islamic militants in the Sinai Peninsula. Key questions remained over how the release of the six police conscripts and a military border guard was negotiated and whether the militants suspected of kidnapping them will be pursued.

Critics warned that the resolution only boosted militants. The biggest winners from the crisis may be hardline Islamists on whom Morsi relies for political support and who said they played a role in mediating the captives' release.

The seven captives were released early Wednesday in the middle of the desert in northern Sinai. They had been abducted last Thursday, sparking widespread public anger over the state's inability to rein in armed groups in the peninsula. The outrage was fueled when a video of the seven was released showing them bound and on the ground, pleading for Morsi to meet the kidnappers' demands for the release of detainees from Sinai, including convicted militants.

Military spokesman Col. Ahmed Mohammed Ali said the release came about as a "result of efforts by military intelligence, in cooperation with the honorable tribal leaders and Sinai residents." Alongside the behind-the-scenes mediation, the military and security forces had carried out a large buildup of troops in Sinai as a show of strength.

Morsi took center stage at a televised welcoming ceremony for the released conscripts. Flanked by his defense and interior ministers, Morsi alone shook their hands and patted their shoulders. Speaking afterward, he praised an "operation" that showcased "perfect" coordination between the armed forces, the police and security agencies.

"On this occasion, although it was painful to see our sons go through this, we stress these important points: Egypt is one body, one leadership, and Egypt has complete control over its territories," he said.

He cited the collaboration between security agencies and the presidency as a model, calling on critics to work with him on the country's problems. "I say come all, let's sit together, discuss, disagree but send one message: We Egyptians, God willing, were born again with the help of these great leaders ... and will achieve a grand renaissance."

Morsi vowed to hunt down the kidnappers, saying "there will be no going back on bringing the criminals to account." He also said the incident was "a departure point for all of us to solve the problems of Sinai, its people and to develop Sinai."

The kidnapping highlighted the growing instability in the desert peninsula bordering Gaza and Israel. Sinai's population, including powerful Bedouin tribes and local families, has long been disgruntled with what they call state discrimination and neglect and heavy-handed security crackdowns. Sinai residents detained in security sweeps have reportedly been tortured and often sit for years in prison with no clear court verdict, fueling their families' anger.

Islamic militants and criminal gangs have grown amid the security vacuum since Egypt's 2011 uprising. Armed groups smuggle weapons, attack security forces and kidnap tourists to trade for relatives held in Egyptian jails. Last August, just over a month after Morsi took office, militants carried out a brazen attack killing 16 Egyptian soldiers along the border with Gaza and Israel. The culprits for that attack are still unidentified.

Sheikh Aref Abu Akr, a top tribal leader in northern Sinai, dismissed calls in Cairo for the kidnappers to be punished, saying "people treated unjustly as demands." Abu Akr was among tribal chiefs who met with North Sinai's provincial governor as part of the mediation efforts.

"Cairo is not Sinai. People are sitting in air conditioned rooms and the media portrays us as Afghanistan," he told The Associated Press. "We don't have Jihadists." He said the state must now follow through on promises to address Sinai grievances and increase development.

Abu Akr told Egypt's Al-Masri Al-Youm newspapers that local mediators convinced the kidnappers to release their captives to prevent bloodshed from a possible military assault.

Liberal politician and former lawmaker Amr Hamzawy lauded the captives' release, calling it "successful crisis management." Now, he wrote on his Twitter account, authorities must deal with the Sinai issue "which shook state sovereignty and national security, and where grievances have accumulated and development lacked."

Morsi's supporters criticized his opponents for failing to rally behind him and seize the moment.

The main opposition umbrella group, the National Salvation Front, had declined an invitation from Morsi at the height of the crisis to sit down and discuss how to resolve the crisis.

Mourad Aly, a senior adviser to the Muslim Brotherhood's political arm from which Morsi hails, said on his Facebook page that the NSF lost "a lot" by its stance, saying it came off as an "attempt to cause the president to fail, even at the expense of the suffering of the simple people."

He said the opposition should review its position and reconsider working with the president.

Mohamed ElBaradei, a leading figure in the National Salvation Front, praised those who participated in the conscripts' release and said the culprits should be punished. He also said military intelligence should explain the situation in Sinai, saying in an interview with Al-Hayat TV that "the revolution happened for the sake of more transparency."

Little has been made public of the negotiations or who was involved in them. But various hardline Islamist and tribal chiefs have met with officials openly and some have said they are informed of the talks, using their connections in Sinai and working with military intelligence to find a resolution.

"The Islamist groups won a lot out of this," said Mohammed Abu Samra, a member of the Islamic Party, the political arm of the Islamic Jihad group, a former militant group that renounced violence.

Islamists, he said, made clear they had nothing to do with the abductions then helped by identifying the kidnappers and pushing them to negotiate. By cooperating with the tribes and military, the Islamists "showed they were efficient, that they were sincere with the army and that they are no longer part of terrorism networks."

Ahmed Maher, a leading member in the opposition April 6 group, said the resolution of the crisis is "unsettling" and that Morsi appeared to be avoiding stepping on groups with an Islamist agenda, even those pursuing it through violence.

Soon after the abduction, Morsi said he didn't want the kidnappers or the captives to be hurt ? which raised criticism that he was equating the two sides.

"There are common roots between these Jihadi groups and the Muslim Brotherhood. He wouldn't want to upset them," Maher said. Maher, who was himself detained briefly for organizing an anti-government protest, said that while liberal and secular opponents are prosecuted, "we don't see a fourth or even tenth of that treatment with these armed groups in Sinai."

"Morsi didn't win and no one won. But the Jihadists came out stronger, because they were unhurt in this. The state is the biggest loser."

Clearwire board approves higher Sprint offer

(AP) ? Clearwire wants to accept a richer buyout offer made by Sprint this week and is recommending that shareholders vote in favor of it.

Sprint upped its bid by 14 percent to $2.5 billion Tuesday for the wireless data network operator.

Some shareholders have opposed the deal, including Crest Financial, which spurned the latest bid as well.

Sprint Nextel Corp. is offering $3.40 per share for the half of Clearwire Corp. that it does not already own. Its previous offer, from December, was for $2.97 per share.

Clearwire said Wednesday that shareholders will be able to vote on May 31. Only shareholders of record as of April 2 are eligible.

Sprint, based in Overland Park, Kansas, is Clearwire's only major wholesale customer, and uses its network to provide "Sprint 4G" service.

(AP) ? Far-reaching immigration legislation neared a final committee vote on Tuesday as the White House and Democratic supporters sought to delay a showdown over the rights of gay spouses until a debate in the full Senate.

"There have been 300 amendments. Why shouldn't we have one more?" replied Sen. Patrick Leahy, the Vermont Democrat who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee. He was responding to concerns that a vote on the issue inside the panel could unravel months of work on the bill, which gives a chance at citizenship to millions of immigrants living in the United States illegally.

The measure also creates a new program for low-skilled foreign labor and would permit highly skilled workers into the country at far higher levels than is currently the case. At the same time, it requires the government take new steps to guard against future illegal immigration.

As the day wore on, opponents of the bill made a final bid to strip the measure of its signature feature ? a path to citizenship that could take 13 years and payment of fines totaling $2,000 to travel. Sen. Ted Cruz' proposal failed on a vote of 13-5.

The rejection was one of numerous ways in which the bipartisan coalition behind the White House-backed measure demonstrated its command of the proceedings.

Without so much as a roll call vote, the panel adopted a compromise setting the terms of the expansion of H-1B high tech visas, a deal that brought Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah over to the ranks of supporters.

Under the deal, the number of highly skilled workers admitted to the country would rise from 65,000 annually to 110,000, with the possibility of a further rise to 180,000 depending in part on unemployment levels.

Firms where foreign labor accounts for at least 15 percent of the skilled work force would be subjected to tighter conditions than companies less dependent on H-IB visa holders.

The compromise was negotiated by Hatch, whose state is home to a growing high tech industry, and Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. It is designed to balance the interests of industry, which relies increasingly on skilled foreign labor, and organized labor, which represents American workers.

AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka attacked the deal sharply, saying Hatch's amendments "are unambiguous attacks on American workers," and change the bill so high tech companies can bring in foreign workers "without first making the jobs available to American workers.

At the same time, he reaffirmed organized labor's continuing support for the overall measure, a statement that allowed Schumer to add to the bill's majority in committee without driving organized labor into the camp of its opponents.

Robert Hoffman, senior vice president for government affairs at the Information Technology Industry Council, welcomed the deal. "We think it strikes a very good balance between worker protections already in the bill and changes that essentially would make the H-1B visa workable," he said.

"We obviously want to keep moving the bill forward and building support for the legislation, and this agreement allows us to do so."

At the White House, President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden met privately in the Oval Office with a small group of the bill's supporters, part of the administration's campaign to build support.

Justino Mora, 23, who participated, later said he had told the group he came to the United States at age 11, brought by his mother from Mexico to escape poverty and an abusive father. Now a student at UCLA, he has achieved legal status as a result of administration policy that permits individuals brought to the United States as children to legalize.

His mother remains in the county illegally, he said, adding that he told Obama and Biden of the fear and uncertainty of not knowing if she will be deported or detained from one day to the next. "They both were very moved by that aspect. They're both parents," Mora said in an interview.

The controversy over the rights of gay spouses, with the ability to fracture a bipartisan coalition behind the legislation, has hovered in the background of the debate from the beginning.

As drafted by the Gang of Eight, four Republicans and four Democrats who negotiated the basic provisions of the legislation, gay spouses do not have the same right to a green card as heterosexual spouses.

Leahy has introduced a proposal to reverse that, a provision that gay rights organizations seek and that ordinarily the White House and all the committee's Democrats would back. In this case, though, its approval would almost certainly lead Republicans to abandon the bill, and it would face a quick demise on the Senate floor.

"It would kill the bill," said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who was a member of the Gang of Eight but does not have a seat on the Judiciary Committee. "You'd lose the evangelicals, you'd lose the Catholic Church, and the issue is wending its way through the courts. ... And so for the amendment to be included is destructive to this carefully crafted compromise."

Two people familiar with the deliberations said the White House had suggested to Leahy that it would be best to put the controversy aside until the bill goes before the full Senate, and congressional officials said similar pleas had come from Democratic senators. All said they were not authorized to discuss the matter on the record and insisted on anonymity.

Leahy's comment to reporters was unlikely his final word on the issue, and hardly the first time he has demonstrated his independence on this and other bills. Most recently, he was the sole opponent of an amendment that passed 17-1 on Monday to make a third drunk driving conviction a deportable offense for immigrants in some instances.

Still, a vote on the proposal could create political difficulty for Democrats on the committee who support gay rights and are also members of the Gang of Eight, including Schumer and Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois. Durbin has told outside groups he will back the change if it is offered. Schumer hasn't said which way he would vote.

All eight authors of the bill have pledged to maintain the essential outlines of the legislation. A vote to add the gay rights provision could lead to approval on a party-line vote in committee.

How your house looks influences the way you feel on a daily basis. You spend so much of your life in your home, even more if you have a home business. There is a direct correlation between how you feel each day and whether or not you like your home. Make an effort to turn your home into a place you can relax and enjoy yourself, and all your other worries will then seem to melt away. Below are some of the most effective ways to improve your home.

You will want your home to be as comfortable as it possibly can be. There are some things that you dislike, and there is no point in being unsatisfied with having them in your house. If you want to be truly happy, you need to be completely satisfied with your house. If there are additions in your home that you don?t enjoy, such as a bathtub, you need to make changes so that you can replace it with something you will actually enjoy.

Increase the amount of living space available to you. Regardless of how neat and clean you might be, your home may still seem like it is not large enough. If you create more space for yourself, you will be more comfortable without having to move to a new home. You can stop clutter by adding just a little more space to your home.

Try to add more entertainment features to your home. While it is certainly true that swimming pools and spas are great items to have on your property, less substantial things, such as workout rooms are also highly favored. An extra benefit to incorporating these types of recreational features is that they can boost your home?s value.

Never underestimate the importance of lighting in your spaces. Making alterations in your lighting scheme helps alleviate vision issues, can add function to a variety of spaces, and can contribute a new design aesthetic to any room. Replacing light fixtures is an ideal DIY project for beginners that is not too difficult; these simple improvements can really make a difference in the way your home looks.

Grab your gardening tools, and get started! You will want to spend more time at your house if you put effort into creating a beautiful garden. Those who don?t have a green thumb can always consider consulting a gardener to turn your yard into a green paradise. Relaxing in your garden will reduce your stress levels and help make your home a luxurious retreat. Don?t forget that having lots of plants and greenery around will improve the quality of air you are breathing. Your garden can be very beneficial to your home. Vegetables and herbs can make your cooking delicious, and flowers can make your home beautiful.

Focus on the outside of your home. You can bring a fresh new look to your home by adding a new color of siding, updating the windows or even changing the roof. Each time you pull up at home, you will be proud of what you see and enthusiastic about the improvements to your home.

If you spend a lot of time at home, you should be happy with it. For this reason, doing home improvements is not only a value-building, financial investment, but also an investment in bettering your overall well-being.

But you know how cravings go? They rarely go away unless you give in. At least a little.

I guess I could have gone with a?veggie?burger, but in my experience, there?s nothing ?juicy? about a veggie patty. Sure they?re delicious but never juicy. Maybe moist at best. I could have driven into town. It?s a 2-1/2-hour round trip drive. And to be honest, I might have if the craving had been strong enough. The good news is I had a moment of sanity. I decided to stay put and deal with it in a more healthy way.?

I decided to go with mushroom vegan sloppy Joes. Nowhere near a burger, I know, but I thought I?d give it a try. After all, there?s not ground meat of any kind anywhere near me, while I'm camped out in this fire tower cottage.?I don?t know if you?ve tried this before but it was delicious.?Like,?really good.

So good in fact, I kind of surprised myself. Sure I thought a meatless sloppy Joes would be OK. I mean, after all, all the ingredients going in were good on their own. I wasn?t doubting that it would be tasty, but I wasn?t prepared for mouth watering, juicy goodness wrapped up in a bun!

I had this for three meals straight and was feeling a little disappointed when it was all gone. I would have made more if I had more mushrooms. Crisis has be averted. Burger craving satiated, at least for now. I know you were all worried about me, but we can all sleep well tonight. Phew.

This vegan/vegetarian sloppy Joes recipe is perfect if you?re a mushroom lover, but I think my hubby would even have enjoyed this, and he is not exactly a mushroom-loving freak like me. Even if you?re not a mushroom fanatic, I think you could probably do this same recipe with eggplant or shredded zucchini. If you don?t do grains of any kind, consider putting this mushroom heaven in lettuce wraps.

AP CEO calls records seizure unconstitutional

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The president and CEO of The Associated Press says the government's seizure of AP journalists' phone records was "unconstitutional" and already has had a chilling effect on newsgathering.

Gary Pruitt says the Justice Department's secret subpoena of reporters' phone records has made sources less willing to talk to AP journalists.

The Justice Department disclosed the seizure of two months of phone records in a letter the AP received May 10. The letter did not state a reason, but prosecutors had said they were conducting a leaks investigation into how the AP learned about an al-Qaida bomb plot in Yemen before it was made public last year. Pruitt said the AP story contradicted the government's claim at the time there was no terrorist plot.

Pruitt spoke on CBS' "Face the Nation."

Alabama Immigration Law Asks Doctors For Their Papers

WASHINGTON -- Some Alabama physicians and physician assistants were surprised this week to receive a letter with a new demand from the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners: Show us your papers.

Under the state's 2011 immigration law, these medical professionals are now required to prove they are U.S. citizens or in the country legally to maintain their licenses to practice, according to the letter, dated May 16.

The immigration law, H.B. 56, was signed into law two years ago. Based on the the much-contested S.B. 1070 in Arizona, Alabama's law is considered the toughest in the country, in part due to its "papers, please" provision that requires police to ask for an individual's immigration status if they have "reasonable suspicion" the person is undocumented. It was designed specifically to drive undocumented immigrants out of the state, but much of it has since been blocked by the courts.

The medical license component did not kick in until this year. Already-licensed physicians and physician assistants now have only two weeks to get their information to the Medical Licensure Commission. Those applying for a license for the first time will be required to either demonstrate they are in the country legally or sign a declaration of U.S. citizenship and give proof, according to the letter. If they don't provide the information, they will not be able to receive or renew their licenses.

From the letter, signed by Alabama Board of Medical Examiners Executive Director Larry D. Dixon:

A person applying for or renewing a professional license is required to sign a declaration of U. S. citizenship and demonstrate U. S. citizenship or demonstrate lawful presence in the U. S., which is then verified by the federal government. After initial demonstration and verification of U. S. citizenship or lawful permanent residence in the U. S. is made, further demonstration of such status is not required.

H.B. 56 initially made it a crime for undocumented immigrants to engage in business transactions with the state, creating problems for people who wanted to buy utilities or register their mobile homes, among other things. Civil rights groups sued the state on behalf of mobile-home owners, and the provision was blocked by a federal judge in November 2011.

When state lawmakers revised the bill last year -- in part to stem concerns that it was driving out business -- they narrowed that provision but maintained the ban on unauthorized immigrants conducting business with the state for professional licenses, such as those for physicians and physician assistants.

Karen Tumlin, a managing attorney at the National Immigration Law Center, said the license requirement seems to susceptible to the same legal problem as the provision affecting mobile-home owners: The federal government, not the state, has the responsibility to verify immigration status.

"We're deeply troubled by what the board is doing here, because once again it raises the constitutional problem with localities determining who has permission to remain in the United States and who does not," said Tumlin, who has worked to block H.B. 56. "And as a practical matter, we're concerned it would lead to duly licensed individuals in the state of Alabama not being able to contribute to Alabama society and pursue their profession."

Several years ago we (my family and I) were forced to change our health insurance from a classic HMO plan to a ?high-deductible? one. That plan is effectively incomprehensible; ever since we were switched to that plan, we?ve been in collection or sued several times every year. As has everyone else ? literally ? that I have spoken to, who is on one of these plans. All of them. Every single person I?ve spoken to who is on a high-deductible plan has faced multiple medical collections and/or lawsuits. I am not kidding.

The cost has been staggering.

Now, the supposed principle behind high-deductible plans is to force medical consumers (i.e. everyone) to be ?wiser?. To make better choices. Not to get wasteful and expensive MRIs, for example, when an x-ray will do just as well.

There?s just one problem with that noble concept: it?s bullshit. Who among us is qualified to know whether an MRI is more or less suitable than an x-ray for any particular case? A doctor, that?s who. And certainly not the vast majority of patients! Most patients couldn?t tell you the difference between an MRI and an x-ray if you pointed a gun at their heads.

But of course, the real purpose of such plans isn?t to make health consumers wiser. It?s to shift costs, away from the employer and health insurer, and onto ? you guessed it ? the patient. Never mind that since 1980 wages for the middle class and working class have flatlined or declined, while health costs have skyrocketed; we?re scheduled to get the shaft on medical costs nonetheless. Which is why medical bankruptcies have skyrocketed in recent decades.

As has, I strongly suspect, the medical collection industry. Who might be profiting from this explosion in medical costs and lawsuits? Somehow I doubt that it?s the middle class or the poor.

So here?s the most recent thing that happened to us. We got a collection letter from a local hospital. Teri?s doctor had sent her there for some tests a few months ago; nothing terribly unusual, just the kind of test that every woman probably ends up having done sooner or later.

Just to be clear, she?s fine. But there was good and sufficient reason for her doctor to order those tests ? they were certainly appropriate and necessary. She?d had such tests before and they?d been fully covered without question.

But this time we got a bill from the hospital where she?d had the test for $1560.00. Need I say that we were horrified? I?ve been through hell with these medical situations before; the thought of going through all that again was really almost unbearable. Still, I girded my mental loins and plunged in.

There are several things to remember when you?re dealing with this sort of situation:

1. Document everything. I normally make the calls sitting in front of my desktop, with an open Gmail to myself (and I?m running the Lazarus add-on for Firefox, so even if power fails I won?t lose anything). Write down the phone number, the name of the person you?re speaking to, the time of the call and? which organization it is, and anything specific they tell you.

2. Always get confirmation numbers. You WILL need these when speaking to other parties to the issue ? and there are almost always other parties. Pulling as many different parties into the issue is what makes them so hellishly effective. I suspect that most people give up and pay rather than persist against a multifarious bureaucracy in which different organizations never seem to speak to each other.

3. Collect as much information as you can. Speak to each party initially just to get a record of anything that they can tell you. Don?t commit to anything ? especially payments.

4. If you?re calling for a family member, make sure to have their birth date and Social Security number on hand. The Social Security number should not be required (and I?d be damned careful before giving it out), but it?s better to be prepared.

5. Get any documentation that has been mailed to you in front of you before you start making calls. Plus your health insurance card ? as well as the card number of the family member, if you?re not calling for yourself. You don?t want to have to call back because you didn?t have an account number or diagnosis or procedure code, or didn?t know the precise date of service.

6. Don?t lose your temper. The system was designed by the most brilliant experts money could buy, and I believe that it was designed to frustrate and confuse victims ? that is, ?patients? ? so much that they will give up and simply pay, even for services that they?ve already paid for via their health insurance premiums. It?s almost certainly a billion-dollar industry. If you lose your temper, they don?t necessarily win ? but you will lose. Also, remember that the people you?re dealing with are generally low-paid customer service workers, which must be a thankless job. They aren?t responsible for the system, but they can make your progress much harder. A kind word can make a big difference.

So here?s what I did: I called the hospital where the test was performed (who were the ones who had billed us) and asked for the precise procedure that had been performed. That information had not been included on our bill; under the ?Description of Services? section, it only said ?Total Charges?. I also confirmed the date of the test.

That done, I called the referring doctor?s office. I had to wait for a call-back from their billing office, but they gave me the? diagnosis code ? which was vital. Without a diagnosis code, you?re very often lost. I also chatted with them a little to get an idea of some of the referral process.

Next, I called my health insurance company. From them I discovered that the diagnosis code that they had didn?t match the code that the doctor had sent to the hospital when she?d requested the test.

(Here?s how the flow worked, in this case: The doctor sent the patient to the hospital with a diagnosis code. The hospital ran the test and submitted a claim to the health insurance company, passing along the doctor?s diagnosis code. The health insurer told the hospital to go fly a kite, because the code they?d received apparently indicated that this painful test wasn?t medically necessary, and had apparently been chosen by an ?unwise? patient purely for fun. The hospital then billed us directly ? at a grossly inflated cost. Q.E.D. R.I.P.)

Cue sound of trumpets: aha! Somewhere along the way the code had changed from a medically-valid diagnosis to an ?unnecessary? code. Whose fault was that? We?ll never know.

Oh, something funny: when I had first called the health insurer, weeks earlier, they had told me that if the hospital hadn?t told us that we would have to pay those costs when the test was performed, WE should tell the hospital that we weren?t obligated to pay for them.

Let that soak in for a moment. Either the hospital or the health insurer screwed up ? not us. But the health insurer told us to tell the hospital to go fuck themselves, in so many words. Why don?t I think that this would have worked out well? Somehow I don?t see the hospital simply ?letting it go?. They use collection agencies, and those guys are nasty.

With that critical piece of information, I fished for a bit more information. I asked the health insurance rep if the correct code ? which I was able to give her exactly ? would have been a covered service. She confirmed that it was. She also offered to initiate a re-check on the claim; it would take a month or two, but they?d go back to the hospital and see if the diagnosis code had been correct. She volunteered that it would be faster if I contacted the hospital directly and had them re-submit with the correct code.

As one last belt-and-suspender check, I asked her if doing BOTH processes at once ? that is, having the health insurance revisit the claim, but also having the hospital re-submit it ? would be a potential problem. She assured me that it couldn?t hurt.

I thanked her profusely, and got a confirmation code. Then I called the doctor?s office and told them what had happened. They offered to contact the hospital with the correct diagnosis code and have them re-submit the claim. I gratefully accepted.

Lastly I called the hospital, gave them the health-insurance confirmation code and the correct diagnosis code from the doctor, and told them to re-submit.

All in all this took quite a bit of time and caused me a lot of stress. The scary thing is that this sort of thing happens several times a year just to my family ? and this was a relatively easy? incident. Multiply that by the millions of Americans who are on high-deductible and similar plans, and you have?what?

A medical system designed to plunder, rob, and deny services that patients have paid for ? that?s what!

The Weirdest Thing on the Internet Tonight: Two Colors, Three Dimensions

Mixing surreal anaglyphic animation and a haunting soundtrack, this stunning short by Stephen Chan is cool enough to watch even without the glasses. Of course if you want the full effect but don't have access to pair, just blink your eyes alternately real fast. That might work.

Boston Marathon invites stopped runners back

BOSTON (AP) ? Boston Marathon runners who were stopped on the course when bombs went off at the finish line will have a chance to come back and run again next year, race organizers said on Thursday.

One month and one day after the April 15 explosions that killed three people and wounded hundreds more, the Boston Athletic Association said that 5,633 people who were stopped on the second half of the course when the race was shut down at 2:50 p.m. will be allowed to register early for next year's race.

"The opportunity to run down Boylston Street and to cross the finish line amid thousands of spectators is a significant part of the entire Boston Marathon experience," B.A.A. executive director Tom Grilk said. "With the opportunity to return and participate in 2014, we look forward to inviting back these athletes."

The B.A.A. said runners who passed the halfway checkpoint at 13.1 miles but hadn't reached the finish line will get a code to register in August; regular registration is scheduled to begin in September. Runners will be required to pay the entry fee ? the amount hasn't been determined yet ? but they will not have to re-qualify by running another marathon in a given time.

Normal registration for the Boston Marathon requires a qualifying time from 3 hours 5 minutes for an 18- to 34-year-old man to 5:25 for an 80-year-old woman. The requirement forces most runners to spend a full year training for their qualifying and Boston runs and makes the race, for many, a one-time event.

Celeste Corcoran is recovering from the Boston Marathon bombings in a hospital bed directly next to her daughter, Sydney, who was also severely injured in the blast.

?

The announcement was quickly praised on the B.A.A. Facebook page, where thousands of people ? many of them using the B.A.A. logo or other marathon-related photos for their profile picture ? "liked" the announcement. Hundreds posted comments vowing to return.

"I don't feel entitled to this in the least," wrote Maggie Lapan. "But thank you BAA."

The B.A.A. said it has contacted those affected, a group that includes 2,611 runners from Massachusetts and 726 from 47 countries. There are 2,983 women and 2,650 men, aged 18 to 82.

"Boston spectators are known for their impassioned support and unbridled enthusiasm, and they will give these returning athletes some of the loudest cheers at next year's race," Grilk said in the release, which added that no decision has been made on whether the 2014 field will expand to include an expected influx of runners who say they want to run next year to support the race and the city.

"We want to thank our participants for their patience as we continue to work through the details of arranging this accommodation for them," Grilk said. "And we ask for continued patience from the running community as we plan the 2014 Boston Marathon next April."

The B.A.A. has granted limited deferrals in the past, including one for European runners who couldn't get to town because of the Icelandic volcano eruption in 2010. Last year, with forecasts of dangerous heat, organizers allowed everyone a chance to defer their entry to this year's race; a few hundred took advantage of the offer.

Pro-Assad hackers attack Financial Times

LONDON (Reuters) - The website and Twitter feed of the Financial Times were hacked on Friday, apparently by the "Syrian Electronic Army", a group of online activists who say they support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The group posted links on the newspaper's Twitter feed to a YouTube video, uploaded on Wednesday, which purports to show members of the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front Syrian rebel group executing blindfolded and kneeling members of the Syrian army.

The video could not be independently verified.

Hacking attacks on verified Twitter accounts of media organizations have triggered urgent calls for the micro-blogging website to increase account security, particularly for news outlets.

"Various FT blogs and social media accounts have been compromised by hackers and we are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible," a statement from the FT press office said. The paper is owned by Pearson Plc

Twitter was not immediately available for comment.

Stories on the FT's website had their headlines replaced by "Hacked By Syrian Electronic Army" and messages on its Twitter feed read: "Do you want to know the reality of the Syrian 'Rebels?'", followed by a link to the video.

The FT is the latest media organization under attack by the group, which was also behind last month's incident involving the Associated Press. In that hack, the Syrian Electronic Army took control of AP's official Twitter feed and sent out a bogus message that two explosions at the While House injured President Obama. The false tweet triggered the U.S. financial markets to take a brief but steep plunge.

"Twitter has become a big enough media outlet that they should provide better security for high-value accounts like the Associated Press, the FT and others," said Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer with security software maker F-Secure.

Indeed since the spate of attacks commandeering media organizations' Twitter accounts, including the BBC, National Public Radio, CBS, Reuters News and French news service France 24, the pressure for the social media site to tighten up security will only intensify.

Twitter has 200 million users world-wide who send out more than 400 million tweets a day, making it a potent distributor of news.

For years, security experts have called on Twitter to introduce an additional safety measure, a two-step process to log in, that would help reduce breaches.

This type of authentication has long been used by governments and big corporations and in recent years some consumer Internet companies like Facebook, Google and Microsoft have embraced it.

"You can get two-factor authentication for World of Warcraft, but you can't get it for Twitter. Go figure," Hypponen said.

Brian Krzanich takes the reins at Intel today

Image

Today's the day, trivia fans, when "Paul Otellini" stops being the answer to the question "Who is the CEO of Intel?" A fortnight ago, after a prolonged bout of speculation, current COO Brian Krzanich was anointed as the Silicon Valley giant's sixth leader -- giving him a mere two weeks to order a new desk and buy a fancier sports car. He'll be joined by Renée James, who is assuming the mantle of company president today. The pair is taking control of a company that is top of the PC food chain, but which has yet to mount a credible challenge to ARM's mobile dominance -- but the strategic stuff can wait until tomorrow, once they've settled in.
