Kepler Telescope Spots 3 New Planets In The 'Goldilocks Zone'

NASAAstronomers have found three planets orbiting far-off stars that are close to Earth-sized and in the "habitable zone": a distance from their suns that makes the planets' surfaces neither too hot nor too cold, but just right.
One of the three planets orbits a star with the prosaic name Kepler-69.
"Kepler-69 is a sun-like star," says Thomas Barclay, a research scientist at the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute who uses the Kepler space telescope, which is on a mission to search for Earth-like planets. It finds planets by looking for tiny dips in the light coming from a star. The dips come when a planet passes in front of a star. By measuring the interval between dips, astronomers can figure out how long it takes a planet to orbit its star.
? Back in the good old days, you'd find one or two crappy, Jupiter-like planets, and you'd be on the cover of 'Time' magazine. But those days are long gone.
The planet around Kepler-69 is "around 70 percent bigger than Earth, so what we call super-Earth-sized," says Barclay. "This represents the first super-Earth-sized planet in the habitable zone of a star like our sun."
Twenty five years ago, if you had asked astronomers if there were planets around other stars, they'd probably say maybe, but they'd admit they were just speculating.
Boy, have times changed. In the past two decades, using some innovative measurement techniques, astronomers have confirmed the existence of lots of planets ? 697, in fact ? according to the Exoplanet Orbit Database.
"Back in the good old days, you'd find one or two crappy, Jupiter-like planets, and you'd be on the cover of Time magazine. But those days are long gone," says Paul Butler, a planet hunter at the Carnegie Institution for Science. Most new planets barely elicit a yawn these days.
The Kepler mission is partly to blame for that. The spacecraft, which launched in 2009, has been wildly successful, having found more than 100 planets, most of which have been the nasty Jupiter-sized planets Butler talks about. But the three planets being announced today are different.
In addition to the one orbiting Kepler-69, there are two around Kepler-62 that are even closer to Earth-sized. Kepler-62 is a dimmer star than Kepler-69, so the planets' orbits must be closer to the star to keep them in the habitable zone. The planets around Kepler-62 are described in the online edition of the journal Science.
William Borucki, an astronomer with the NASA Ames Research Center and the principal investigator for Kepler, says the mission's goal is to find how many Earth twins are out there.
"If they're frequent, then there may be lots of life throughout the galaxy," says Borucki. "They may just be waiting for us to call and say, 'Hello, we'd like to join the club.' Or if we don't find any, the answer may be just the opposite. Maybe we're alone, there isn't anybody out there; there will never be a Star Trek because there's no place to go to."
And that's a sobering thought.

Color of OLEDs can now at last be predicted thanks to new modeling technique
Apr. 15, 2013 ? OLEDs can be made more efficiently and at lower cost by a better understanding of the electronic processed.
OLEDs -- thin, light-emitting surfaces -- are regarded as the light sources of the future. White OLEDs consist of stacked, ultra-thin layers, each emitting its own light color, all together resulting in white light. Up to now it has been impossible to predict the exact light color produced by a white OLED; manufacturers had to rely on trial and error. Researchers at Eindhoven University of Technology, Philips Research, Dresden University of Technology and other institutes have now developed a method that allows the color of light produced by a specific OLED design to be calculated with high precision. They did this by modeling the complex processes in OLEDs on a molecular scale. This technique will allow manufacturers to greatly improve their OLED design processes and reduce the cost. At the same time the energy efficiency and lifetime of OLEDs can be increased.
The results were published online on Sunday 14 April 2013 in the journal Nature Materials.
Revolution
It looks as though OLEDs -- organic light emitting diodes -- will cause a revolution in the world of lighting. OLEDs are light-emitting surfaces, which means they are visually more attractive than point light sources such as conventional or LED lamps. They can also be flexible and transparent, which opens up all kinds of new opportunities. Plus -- and unlike normal LEDs -- OLEDs are made of very low-cost materials, of which only very thin layers are needed. As a result, the prices of OLEDs are expected to be low once mass production starts. This clip gives an impression of what's possible with OLEDs.
To predict what kind of light an OLED design will produce, the researchers made computer models of the electronic processes in the OLED at the deepest level. These showed for example the injection of electrical charge, the creation and distribution of the 'excitons' -- pairs of positively charged electrons and holes in a bound state -- and the creation from these of individual photons, the light that is emitted. "At first we thought it would never be possible," says researcher Peter Bobbert of Eindhoven University of Technology. The main difficulty was that each change in the electrical charge also influences all the other charges, which makes the simulation extremely complex. But they succeeded by using Monte Carlo simulations with nanosecond steps. The results proved to correspond very well to measurements carried out at Philips on real OLEDs made at Dresden University of Technology.
Factor of three
One of the results is that the researchers can now predict where light is produced and lost in the ultra-thin layers. That makes it possible to optimize OLEDs so they produce the same amount of light using much less electric power. The researchers expect that the efficiency can still be increased by a factor of three. Manufacturers can also use this new knowledge to design OLEDs with specific colors. They can calculate in advance exactly how thick the different layers need to be, and how much pigment has to be added to the layers. The much shorter and less costly design process will allow the overall development costs to be reduced, leading to lower prices of the final products. "This has already been possible for a long time in the field of micro-electronics, with the ability to precisely predict the behavior of integrated circuits," says Bobbert. "Now we can do the same thing with OLEDs."

FDA Cites 30 Compounding Pharmacies for Unsanitary Practices
The safety practices of compounding pharmacies in relation to preparation of sterile fluids came to the forefront in 2012, when products from the New England Compounding Center , NECC, were linked to the fungal meningitis outbreak that occurred. In March, two other compounding pharmacies issued voluntary recalls for potentially contaminated sterile products, this time before any harm was reported to those receiving the products.
Yesterday, Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D. , commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration , provided a post on the agency's blog detailing continued difficulty the FDA is experiencing in inspecting some of the compounding pharmacies and how 30 out of 31 inspected compounding pharmacies were found to have deficient sanitary practices.
30 Compounding Pharmacies Failed Inspection of Sterile Practices
In reaction to the combined deaths and illnesses of more than 700 people who received contaminated injectable drugs as medical treatment for back and joint pain in the fall of 2012's fungal meningitis outbreak, the FDA has been proactively inspecting the facilities of various compounding pharmacies throughout the nation based on risk-based model of known data about such facilities, explained Hamburg in the blog post. This was initiated in February and is ongoing. In addition, inspections for-cause due to complaints/reports about serious adverse reactions and in response to states' request for assistance from the federal agency have also been conducted.
Between February and early April, 30 of the 31 proactively inspected compounding pharmacies were found to be deficient in their sterile practices -- and the one such pharmacy that received no FDA form 483 that does not list objectionable conditions at the facility is not producing sterile drugs. In other words, all 30 of the compounding pharmacies inspected that produce sterile drugs were doing so without compliance with established sterile practices. A summary of the 2013 FDA inspection report details the agency's findings.
Among the findings were technicians handling supposedly sterile products with their bare hands, black particles floating in a labeled sterile product, and rust and mold found in rooms used to prepare sterile products.
Should It Come as a Surprise that Some Compounding Pharmacies Resist FDA Inspection?
As realistic or cynical as the public at large is these days about government and big business, it is unlikely that the fact that some of the compounding pharmacies are resisting inspection by the FDA, although it is a sad commentary of the ethics practiced in some health care realms where profit is more important than safety.
Hamburg wrote that in at least four of the agency's recent inspections were delayed by the compounding pharmacies' tactics to deny the FDA full access to necessary documents and facilities and in two other instances, the agency was required to obtain administrative warrants from the courts to allow such inspections. U.S. marshals accompanied FDA inspectors into these two facilities.
